Billie is a commercial transactions lawyer with deep roots in the technology sector.
Throughout her career, Billie has focused on IP matters and tech transactions for both vendors and customers and she has become a trusted legal advisor to C-suite executives. As Associate General Counsel (EMEA) for two Silicon Valley companies, Billie was responsible for all legal matters across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, built the EMEA Legal teams and negotiated software licensing and services deals for Openwave and tech development deals for 3Com/Palm. As Senior Corporate Counsel for Gap, Inc., Billie was lead counsel for all technology transactions, including a global outsourcing deal with IBM valued at $1.1B. Early in her career she was a business affairs lawyer for the Smithsonian Institution and an associate with Covington & Burling.
As an adjunct law professor, Billie created and taught the International Intellectual Property Law course at Vermont Law School. She also frequently lectures on IP and tech licensing at Tuck Business School, Suffolk Law School, and the Association of Corporate Counsel conferences. Her publications include: Your First Licensing Deal, Managing a Pan-European Reduction in Forces, So You Want an ® Rating, Teaching Kids to Ski, and Intellectual Property in Academia: A Practical Guide for Scientists and Engineers.
Prior to joining Outside GC, Billie was on-demand General Counsel for Planisware, a software company based in Paris, France and San Francisco where she advised executives on corporate matters and negotiated dozens of SaaS and professional services agreements with Planisware’s customers around the globe. In 2008 Billie founded the Zermatt Legal Group to help clients commercialize and protect their intellectual property assets.
Billie graduated cum laude from the University of Massachusetts, earned her JD from the University of Denver and completed advanced courses at Harvard Law School, Dartmouth College and London Business School. She is licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania and New Hampshire and to appear before the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
When not advising clients, you might find Billie chasing her family down the ski slopes or playing tennis. Since 2008 Billie has been on the ski patrol and a ski instructor at Okemo Mountain Resort in Vermont. Currently, she serves on the board of the Upper Valley Aquatic Center and on the Parents Committee at Philips Exeter Academy. Through her leadership and participation in the annual Harpoon Brewery’s Point-to-Point cycling event, her team has raised more than $25,000 for the Vermont Food Bank. Billie and her family live in Hanover, NH with their two Rhodesian Ridgebacks.
