Billie is a highly effective General Counsel with deep global experience in the technology and specialty retail sectors, and in the creative arts. Billie’s current work focuses on commercializing medical technologies developed by longtime OGC client ZOLL Medical Corporation and its cloud-solutions subsidiary, ZOLL Data Systems. Billie also advises CareerBlast, creators of Brandboost™: the AI-driven personal branding tool.
Earning the trust of an impressive roster of C-suite executives over the years, Billie has proven to be a natural negotiator, achieving success in numerous high-stakes transactions, particularly in the tech sector. Prior to joining OGC, Billie was the acting General Counsel for Planisware, a software company based in Paris and San Francisco, where she provided senior stakeholders with valuable insight on a wide range of complex legal matters and negotiated SaaS deals with Planisware’s customers around the globe. In 2008, Billie founded the Zermatt Legal Group to help other innovators commercialize and protect their intellectual property assets; in addition to Planisware, clients have included VMware, ImmuRx, and Charlotte Russe.
Billie’s global IP skillset was also enriched when she was an associate in Covington’s Technology and IP Transactions Group in London. During her years in the U.K., she also served as Associate General Counsel (EMEA) for two Silicon Valley companies. In the latter role, Billie was responsible for all legal matters across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, providing strong leadership and foresight to the EMEA teams. She created precise, pioneering software licensing and services deals for Openwave (the firm that developed Wireless Application Protocol) and product development deals for 3Com/Palm. Subsequently, in San Francisco Billie was lead counsel for all technology transactions for Gap, Inc., including a global outsourcing deal with IBM valued at $1.1B.
While serving as a business affairs lawyer for the Smithsonian Institution early in her career, Billie developed a lifelong commitment to protecting the IP rights of artists and musicians. Her pro bono services have included advising Inocente, the San Diego–based visual artist, on a documentary film that ultimately won an Oscar.®
As a part-time law professor and avid mentor, Billie launched and taught the highly popular International Intellectual Property Law course at Vermont Law School. She also frequently lectures on IP and tech licensing at Tuck Business School, Suffolk Law School, and the Association of Corporate Counsel conferences. Her periodical publications include “Your First Licensing Deal,” “So You Want an ® Rating,” and “Teaching Kids to Ski,” and she co-authored the book Intellectual Property in Academia: A Practical Guide for Scientists and Engineers (Taylor & Francis).
Billie graduated cum laude from the University of Massachusetts, earned her JD from the University of Denver, and completed advanced continuing-education courses at Harvard Law School, Dartmouth College, and London Business School. She is licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania and New Hampshire and to appear before the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
As someone who likes to reach new heights in everything she does, Billie was recently appointed a Mountain Ambassador at Sugarbush Resort, and since 2008 she had been on the ski patrol at Okemo Mountain Resort. She is also on the board of multiple organizations, including the Upper Valley Aquatic Center, and is a member of the Parents Committee at Phillips Exeter Academy. Billie and her family live in Hanover, NH, with their Rhodesian Ridgeback, Bode.
