James M. Jacobson is a healthcare, heath tech and life sciences general counsel with 25 years of experience as a partner in the health law and FDA practices of two global law firms and as a general counsel in both start-up and publicly-traded multinationals.
For the past 5 years, Jim has served as General Counsel and Secretary for Aptus Health, Inc., a Merck-affiliated digital health services, media and tech company serving pharma and HCP customers in 80 countries, recently taking the company through its successful acquisition by WebMD. At Aptus, Jim also served as Chief Compliance Officer and Chief Privacy Officer, and supported the company’s HR, Finance, Sales and Business Development departments globally. Before Aptus, Jim was chief counsel to a $2B pharmaceutical and device division of a leading global diversified drug, device and health services provider; founded health law and life sciences departments at two major national law firms; and served as General Counsel or Special Counsel to many of the best known healthcare and life sciences trade associations.
A pioneer of the health law, privacy, and digital health industries, Jim is a nationally-recognized for his deep knowledge in diverse areas of health and life sciences law, including data privacy and security, digital health tech regulation, life sciences intellectual property, licensing transactions and M&A, anti-fraud and abuse, contracting, corporate, real estate, and employment law. He has also specialized in the R&D, quality, regulatory, launch, supply chain, and commercialization of FDA-regulated drugs and devices, and QMS systems for medical app creators.
Earlier in his career, Jim clerked for the D.C. Court of Appeals, Jim worked on the Clinton White House health care task force, advocated and testified on behalf of healthcare stakeholders on Capitol Hill and in numerous state legislatures, and assisted with the drafting of revisions to several key health laws, including HIPAA, ERISA and Medicare. Before law school, Jim had an early career managing clinical trials in psychopharmacology at Mass. General Hospital.
