Ted joined the firm in 2012, and brings over 24 years of legal and business experience both in-house and in private practice, with a focus on consumer-oriented digital media, technology, online, e-commerce and professional services companies. Ted handles a wide range of complex commercial transactions, including the licensing and development of technology and content, online services, mobile, digital media, e-commerce, and technology services. Ted’s clients at Outside GC include Lotame Solutions, Hillel International, Slate Magazine, Panoply, Vox Media, Pear Therapeutics, Infinitive, Modus Create, January Digital, Cricket Media, SecureSystem, Ticket Evolution and Medicomp Systems.
Before joining Outside GC, Ted spent 14 years in both legal and business development positions. He served as General Counsel and Head of Business Development at Envision EMI, an education company located in Vienna, VA; and prior to Envision EMI, Ted was the head deal lawyer at the online division of the Post, Washington Post Digital, working on content licensing and distribution agreements, as well as many technology services contracts. Before the Post, Ted was General Counsel at ePals (now Cricket Media), an online education company and children's publisher located in Virginia, where he handled investment agreements, strategic alliance and licensing contracts, SaaS agreements, and product development and distribution agreements, and also served in a business development role. Prior to ePals, Ted was the head licensing and technology lawyer at Amazon.com in Seattle, managing all legal matters for the following business units: digital (Kindle; online music, text and video in deals with publishers, labels and studios; and mobile deals); Amazon Web sServices (AWS); search and online advertising; and platform licensing. Finally, before Amazon, Ted worked at AOL’s headquarters in Virginia, leading the mobile and messaging groups within the legal department, working on deals with major mobile operators and device OEMs, as well as many other strategic technology deals. In addition to his deal work, Ted also worked on several new product launches at several of these companies, multiple acquisitions, policy issues, and a few litigation matters over the course of his career. Prior to going in-house, Ted spent four years in private practice as an intellectual property and business associate at Baker & Hostetler and Fisher Wayland Cooper Leader & Zaragoza, representing major media, entertainment, sports and technology companies.
Ted graduated in 1994 from Columbia Law School in New York, NY where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. He graduated cum laude (top 10% of the class) in 1991 from Columbia College in New York, NY with a B.A. in American History. Ted attended Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. and graduated in the top ten in his class at Sidwell.
When not practicing law, Ted is often spending time with his son searching for great dim sum, and his wife searching for the perfect lobster roll. Ted is an avid sports fan – playing and watching -- and also an enthusiastic poker player. Ted lives in Washington, D.C.
