Stephan is a technology and privacy lawyer. He advises the firm's clients in all aspects of technology law, software law, cyberlaw, internet law, computer, e-commerce, IP and IT law, as well as social media law, privacy and data security law. Stephan's clients at Outside GC include AirMap, Localytics, ContraFect Corporation, Cursus Technologies, ModusLink and Oblong Industries.
Prior to joining the firm, Stephan served in a number of general counsel and other senior positions for several blue chip technology corporations (e.g., Intel and Symantec) in France, the UK and the US. Stephan’s practice focuses on drafting and negotiating various software licensing and other technology-focused agreements under U.S., European and Canadian law, including master software and/or end-user licenses, software development agreements, SaaS and other cloud computing agreements, non-disclosure, consulting, outsourcing, support, and professional services agreements.
On the privacy side, his practice focuses on helping clients comply with EU, Canadian and US laws, with an emphasis on assisting US-based clients in navigating the EU privacy landscape, and in particular, complying with the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the ePrivacy Directive (a/k/a the "Cookies Directive"), as well as with the myriad of national EU privacy legislations. Stephan also advises clients on developing global privacy documentation, policies and procedures, and on drafting internationally-compliant privacy policies and statements.
Stephan is a graduate of the New York University School of Law and of the Université of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne School of Law. He is a member of the New York Bar, the Law Society of England and Wales, and the French Bar. He is also a licensed Canadian lawyer.
He recently served as a co-chair to the Privacy, Cybersecurity, and Virtual Rights Committee of the American Bar Association's Section of International Law. He also served as a co-chair to the Committee on Legal Education and Admission to the Bar of the New York State Bar Association. Stephan is also a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals and a frequent published author on various international privacy matters, including recently on the theme of the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield and the GDPR for the IAPP’s Privacy Advisor publication.
Stephan loves everything international, navigating foreign cultures and juggling foreign legal concepts. He enjoys traveling to foreign countries, and is a real film buff. He is also a real tennis fan and has a passion for Indian cooking, which he studied for 3 years in university in the UK!
