Emmy Hessler joined the firm in 2012 after more than a dozen years with healthcare-related entities.
Emmy’s practice concentrates on biotech, medical technology, and other businesses that develop products, services and solutions to help patients. Inspired by the power of research and technology to meet unmet clinical needs and improve patient lives, her clients’ passion for transforming healthcare fuels Emmy’s dedication to helping them achieve their business goals. A solid business partner and advisor, Emmy brings deep experience in transactional work, clinical trial support and general corporate law, together with a broad understanding of the challenges and decision drivers in the U.S. healthcare model.
Emmy began her legal career with the premier law firm of Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom. There, she represented clients in the drafting and negotiation of numerous public and private M&A and corporate finance deals, and advised clients on securities and general corporate matters. She then joined Boston Scientific Corporation, progressing through several roles during a period of explosive growth for this global manufacturer of medical devices.
Over the course of nearly eight years with Boston Scientific, she closed over 35 strategic transactions, including supply and distribution agreements, M&A transactions, patent licenses, and investments in start-up companies. She also served as lead counsel to several business units, driving pre- and post-commercialization legal support for over 50 product launches. Her hands-on responsibilities encompassed a diverse array of areas, including commercial contracts and legal counseling for finance, clinical, regulatory, supply chain, sales and marketing, and government relations initiatives.
The next phase of Emmy’s career shifted her closer to the provider side of health care, where she witnessed firsthand the miracles that happen when healthcare providers and patients are armed with the right tools. These executive-level positions provided her with direct participation and visibility into internal operations, payer considerations and provider decisions. First, recruited to the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic as Associate General Counsel, Strategic Initiatives, she led several corporate governance initiatives and corporate finance transactions. Next, as General Counsel for Aspen Dental Management, Inc., she advised management on strategic and legal matters, and managed the legal department and budget.
Prior to embarking on a legal career, Emmy acquired a firm grounding in financial accounting and business processes as a Senior Staff Auditor with Bank of Boston Corporation (now part of Bank of America).
A Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude graduate of Wellesley College, Emmy earned her J.D. with Honors from The University of Chicago Law School.
Emmy serves as an Adjunct Professor at Boston University School of Law, teaching upper level Transactional Contract Drafting. In her spare time, she enjoys running, sports, and relaxing with friends. A native of Akron, Ohio, Emmy’s professional interest in the healthcare sector is not entirely without personal self-interest: She aspires to remain healthy and live long enough to see her beloved but beleaguered Cleveland Browns reach (and win!) the Super Bowl.
