Brandt Schmidt brings over 15 years of legal experience to Outside GC, including experience with a broad range of commercial transactions, corporate governance, securities, software, and retail matters.
Prior to joining Outside GC, Brandt was most recently Associate General Counsel with Petco Animal Supplies, where for over four years he served as primary legal counsel to various departments within the company including Information Technology (IT), Human Resources (HR), Events and Travel, Finance, Logistics, Construction, and Facilities. While with Petco, Brandt was regularly involved in commercial contracts at all stages of the company’s strategic partnership lifecycle, including pilot/proof of concept, contract drafting and negotiation, contract maintenance and interpretation, dispute resolution, renewal, and termination.
Prior to Petco, Brandt served as an Associate in the Corporate Department of the law firm Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, where his practice focused on general corporate and securities matters, including drafting, negotiating, and reviewing commercial contracts, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) reporting and disclosure, corporate governance matters, securities law compliance, equity incentives, public and private securities offerings, finance, and mergers and acquisitions. His clients were focused in the biotechnology, retail, and hospitality spaces.
Before joining Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, Brandt spent over five years in-house working extensively on securities law, corporate governance, and stock plan administration matters, first with CA Technologies, a provider of business infrastructure software solutions, and then with Encore Capital Group, a global specialty finance company.
Brandt began his legal career as an Associate in the Corporate Department of the law firm Latham & Watkins, where his practice focused on general corporate, corporate governance, securities, secured lending, and mergers and acquisitions. His clients were focused in the biotechnology, retail, banking, and private equity spaces.

Brandt resides in San Diego and is a member of the California State Bar. When not working, Brandt enjoys spending time with his wife Meredith, two children, and three stepchildren, staying fit as a novice powerlifter, growing exotic fruit, surfing, and brewing beer.
