Heather Boussios

Heather Boussios is a pragmatic, solutions-oriented attorney with over twenty years of experience in the life sciences industry. Her career has focused on providing support to small and medium sized life sciences companies, both public and private. She is a strong business partner that is able to identify and help clients execute on business opportunities as well as identify and mitigate business-critical risks. Heather’s diverse background allows her to provide legal support to clients on a variety of matters including contract drafting and negotiations, corporate governance, intellectual property, and compliance. Heather routinely assists clients with structuring and negotiating a diverse array of commercial and research contracts related to: Heather has a wealth of IP experience which allows her to assist clients with patent prosecution and portfolio management, IP risk mitigation activities (including management of adversarial patent proceedings such as oppositions), and IP due diligence. She is routinely invited to speak on IP matters relating to patent prosecution and due diligence. Heather started her career as a Patent Agent before becoming a Patent Attorney. As an in-house counsel, her practice transitioned from focusing on patent prosecution, IP diligence, and licensing to other legal matters such as transactions, corporate governance, and compliance. Prior to joining Outside GC, Heather was Vice President of Legal Affairs at Aptevo Therapeutics, a publicly traded biotherapeutics company and spin-off of Emergent BioSolutions, Inc. At Aptevo, she provided strategic and business-focused legal guidance to the company’s Board of Directors and executive team. In this role, she also served as Acting General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer. Previous to Aptevo, Heather was Assistant General Counsel at Emergent BioSolutions, Inc., where she led a team of IP professionals on patent and licensing matters. While at Emergent, she also provided IP support for M&A transactions and provided legal support to the business development and government contracts departments. Heather started her legal career at the D.C. offices of both Cooley and Morgan Lewis. She is admitted to practice in Maryland and the District of Columbia. She is also a registered patent attorney before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Heather graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Science degree in microbiology from North Carolina State University. She has a juris doctorate degree from American University.
