Gary offers to his clients a broad understanding of both legal and business issues. He has worked for both startups and well established public companies in both legal and business capacities and has co-founded three companies. Prior to joining Outside GC, Gary was the General Counsel of Logisens, Inc., a small, privately-funded, company producing bio-feedback devices for the health care market, where he was responsible for all legal matters involving the company. He came to that position after a stint of 18 months as the director of Technology Transfer at the Colorado State University Research Foundation. There, Gary was responsible for developing and implementing IP strategies and managing the commercialization of inventions ranging from potential Alzheimer treatments to devices for staging theatrical productions.
Gary’s practice has focused on both hardware and software companies. He has practiced as associate general counsel with semiconductor and systems manufacturers LSI Logic and Symbios Logic, where he handled a broad range of licensing, general commercial, sales, distribution and HR matters, both domestically and abroad. In addition, at Symbios, he oversaw a team of contract managers and acted as the director of the Environmental Health & Safety group.
Gary left LSI Logic to co-found SiLutia, an analog telecom semiconductor company. As part of the management team at SiLutia, he helped grow that company until its sale to Applied Micro Circuits Corporation in late 2000. At SiLutia, Gary was responsible for all legal and financial matters facing the company, including development of financial models, licensing and negotiation of the sale of the company. Upon joining AMCC after the acquisition, Gary became the Director of Business Development where he was responsible for developing and implementing non-organic growth strategies for the company.
Gary began his practice at Gordon & Rees, a small litigation firm in San Francisco. He moved from there to a clerkship with the Honorable Jim Carrigan, US District Court judge for the District of Colorado. At the end of his clerkship, Gary joined Pillsbury Winthrop (then Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro), where he practiced environmental law, focusing on transactional and compliance matters. Gary was seconded to Rowe & Maw (now Mayer Brown) in London, UK. There his practice included both environmental and financing matters. Upon returning to the US, Gary opened and managed the US office of a client manufacturing wastewater treatment equipment
Gary received a BS in aerospace engineering and a JD from the University of Virginia. He is active in civic affairs, serving on the Fort Collins Univercity Energy subcommittee and, previously, on the Fort Collins Economic Vitality and Sustainability Group. Gary is also an adjunct professor with the Colorado State University College of Business, where he has taught graduate and undergraduate courses on entrepreneurship and international business.
